Tonal Layers and a Cold Palette

The Grey Scale

Pelletier builds the scene from a narrow band of greys, from near-white snow to deep slate roofs. At arm's length you can see the layers sitting over one another, each pass of tone softening the one beneath. This is why the image reads as one calm block from a distance. The narrow range also means it never fights with furniture or neighbouring art on the wall.

Warmth at the Centre

Look for the lower window. A faint amber glow sits in an otherwise cold picture, and the eye returns to it constantly. The warm note is small and slightly diffused, more suggestion than lamplight, but it anchors the composition and gives the snow its temperature. Without it the scene would be pleasant. The Lone Figure
