17 Mile Drive

Cypress trees march along the shoreline, trunks bent inland by years of salt wind. Guy Rose set his easel against the Monterey coast and recorded the famous 17 Mile Drive as sunlight broke through coastal haze. Broken white surf slides beneath headlands painted in violet grey and sea green. Distant pines blur into fog while the foreground rocks stay warm, ochre catching the last of the afternoon light. Brushwork stays loose and quick, typical of American impressionism, yet the shoreline reads true. A study or sunroom with pale wood and linen suits this seascape well, its cool coastal palette resting the eye.
