Bridge over the Allier

Stone arches cross the river in Bridge over the Allier, a Roger Fry composition where slow green water bends beneath the roadway and poplars rise along the far bank. Buff and slate-grey masonry reads in firm planes, each curve dropping a reflection that closes into a full ellipse on the surface. Foliage above the parapet is built from short, blocky strokes of viridian and ochre, the sky left thin and chalky where it meets the span. It belongs in a study or stair landing, a room where cool light and calm geometry settle a wall without shouting for attention.
