Carnations
Nicolae Vermont's carnations, thick with paint and heavy with colour. A still life that anchors a room the way good furniture does, quietly and for years.

The bouquet stands in a jug, and the light has already found it. Crimson petals open where the sun grazes them, closing into dusty rose and deeper red where it does not. Stems cut on a diagonal, leaves curled at the edges. Vermont paints the hour itself, the moment after the flowers were arranged and before any of it begins to fade. The ground behind them stays thin and earthen, ochre over umber, so the reds read hotter than pigment alone could manage.
Vermont worked in Romania at the turn of the century, part of a generation that brought realist conviction to subjects most painters treated as decoration. He painted workers, interiors and flowers with the same seriousness. That is what separates this still life from prettier ones. Every crimped petal and bent stalk was observed, not invented. The flowers are painted the way a portrait is painted, with attention that costs something.

Still Life Without Sweetness
Still life has always been the quiet test of a painter. Landscapes forgive vagueness and portraits flatter, but a bouquet at arm's length admits nothing. The tradition runs from Dutch vanitas through the Impressionists' flower studies, and by Vermont's era the genre carried a century of accumulated skill. Realist painters in Eastern Europe took it further, treating ordinary subjects with a directness that owed nothing to salon polish. Flowers on a table became a record of light, material and honest labour rather than an ornament.
What holds attention here is the tension between weight and delicacy. The paint is applied thickly, almost bluntly, yet the petals keep their ruffled fragility. Grey-green stems cut across the composition and keep it from collapsing into pure colour. It is an image that survives repetition. On a wall you pass every morning, the reds stay sharp and the observation keeps giving back, which is the real test of a painting you live with.
Thick Strokes, Thin Ground
Loaded Petals
At arm's length the impasto does the work. Vermont builds each bloom from deliberate, loaded strokes, so the petals carry actual relief rather than mere colour. Light from a window rakes across the surface and the flowers seem to open and close depending on where you stand. The crimson shifts into dusty rose exactly where the light would graze a real petal. It reads as touch before it reads as image.
The Earthen Ground
Behind the bouquet the ground is laid thin, ochre over umber, almost scrubbed in. That economy is deliberate. Because the background withholds texture, the thickly painted flowers burn hotter by contrast, and the eye goes straight to the reds. The muted field also gives the composition air. Without it the dense bouquet would crowd the picture. Instead the whole surface breathes, dark at the edges and warm at the centre.
Structure in the Stems
The grey-green stems do more than hold the flowers up. They cut diagonally across the middle of the composition, narrow leaves curling against them, and that diagonal keeps the arrangement from sitting still. The vase or jug anchors the lower edge, its rim catching one bright highlight that steadies everything above. Remove the stems and the picture falls apart into colour. Vermont understood structure as well as surface.

This belongs where food and conversation happen. A dining room with linen, oak and warm plaster takes the reds naturally, and the flowers read as lived-in rather than sweet. In a kitchen, hang it away from steam and direct sun, ideally opposite or beside a window so the raking light works the impasto through the day. The smaller size suits a breakfast nook or the wall above a sideboard. The larger one holds its own above a dining table, centred at eye level, roughly 145 cm from floor to centre. Pair it with ceramics, dark wood and nothing else red. The painting supplies all the colour a room needs.
