The Port of Pully

Sailboats and steamers crowd the harbor at Pully, their masts a fine dark lattice against the pale water of the lake. Felix Vallotton reduces the scene to flat, confident shapes: a jetty cuts across the foreground, rooftops stack along the shore, and the mountains beyond sit as a single unbroken band. Every plane is sharply divided, light handled in broad unmodulated areas, the way Vallotton built his landscapes from hard-edged blocks of color rather than soft atmosphere. Blue water, white hulls, grey stone quays. It belongs above a desk or in a hallway where clean lines and cool color can hold their own.
