Carnations — Canvas

Carnations crowd the foreground, their ruffled heads nodding at odd angles in a still life by Nicolae Vermont. The Romanian painter handles each bloom with thick, deliberate strokes. Petals shift from deep crimson into dusty rose where the light grazes them. Grey-green stems cut diagonally across the middle of the composition, leaves narrow and slightly curled. Behind the flowers, a muted earthen ground, ochre and umber layered thin, lets the reds burn hotter by contrast. A glass vase or ceramic jug holds the bouquet, its rim catching one bright highlight. Vermont was known for realist conviction, and here every crimped petal edge and bent stalk is observed, not invented. Suited to a dining room or kitchen where floral subjects read as lived-in rather than sweet.
