Landscape with a Church and Cypresses Ca 1914
A cypress and a bell tower above a southern hillside church, painted around 1914. Olive, umber and dusty blue settle a room without effort.

One cypress rises first. It stands darker than anything else in the picture, a green-black spire against pale walls and a bell tower that just clears the treeline. Below it the hillside dries to chalk. Pankiewicz painted this church around 1914 with quick, sun-hardened strokes, oil laid thick where shadow pools and thin where the light burns the ground back to white. Nothing is labored. The sky is barely worked at all, left open so the surface of the paint can breathe.
Pankiewicz began in the opposite register. His early Polish work was dark, tonal, moody in the manner of Young Poland, built from browns and twilight greys. Then came Paris, and later the south of France, where his palette lifted and his touch loosened. This landscape belongs to that second life. It is the work of a painter who had learned restraint and was using it to record heat, distance and a single vertical of shade.

A Polish Painter in French Light
Pankiewicz stands at the junction of two traditions. He carried the tonal seriousness of Polish painting into direct contact with French post-impressionism, and eventually led a generation of Polish artists to Paris to study under him. The southern landscape became his proving ground. Where Cézanne built with planes and the Fauves with color, Pankiewicz built with economy. He kept the plein air habit of working fast outdoors but held his color to a narrow, disciplined range.
What holds attention here is the balance. A heavy dark mass on one side, pale architecture catching light in the middle, and a sky left deliberately unfinished. The composition is vertical where landscape usually runs horizontal, and that tension gives it quiet authority. It is a picture that asks little of a room and gives back more each week, the kind of image that stays interesting after the novelty of a new wall wears off.
Thick Shadow, Thin Light
The Loaded Brush
Look close at the shadow side of the cypress and the paint sits high, almost sculpted, catching real light in the ridges. On the sunlit walls the opposite happens. The brush runs nearly dry and the ground shows through, so the building seems to glow from behind the paint rather than from it. That contrast of density is visible from a meter away and it is what gives the surface its life.
A Narrow Palette
Count the colors and you run out quickly. Olive, umber, a dusty blue, the chalk white of walls, a muted terracotta for roofs. Pankiewicz refuses the temptation of a bright southern blue sky, and that refusal is the point. By holding the range tight he makes the one dark vertical carry all the drama. In a room, the same restraint means the picture argues with nothing on the wall beside it.
The Open Sky
The upper third is barely painted at all. Thin, even strokes, no clouds worked up, no atmosphere performed. This is compositional courage rather than laziness. The empty sky pushes the eye down to the church and the cypress, and it gives the whole picture a stillness that heavily worked skies destroy. At arm's length you can see where the brush slowed and where it simply stopped.

This is a picture for a room that gets used quietly. A hallway with a runner, a study with a reading lamp, the wall beside a staircase. The muted olive and umber sit well against limewash, warm grey or unpainted wood, and the dusty blue picks up linen and stoneware on a nearby shelf. Hang it at eye level, centered about 145 cm from the floor, where the vertical of the cypress can read against a doorway or a tall bookcase. The smaller size suits a narrow wall or a pair with a second landscape. The larger one holds its own above a sideboard or a low console, where the pale sky keeps the space above the furniture from feeling crowded. Warm lamplight brings out the thick shadow strokes.
