Landscape with a Church and Cypresses Ca 1914

A dark cypress lifts above the rooftops of a small church, its bell tower breaking the treeline. Jozef Pankiewicz paints the southern countryside around 1914 with loose, sun-hardened strokes, oil laid thick where shadow pools and thin where the hillside dries to chalk. Green-black spires anchor one side of the composition while pale walls and terracotta roofs catch the light, the brushwork quick and unlabored, color held to olive, umber, and dusty blue. The sky stays open and unworked, letting the painted surface breathe. A quiet study or hallway benefits from its muted southern palette and calm vertical rhythm.
