Warsaw Cab at Night

A hansom cab waits at a lamplit corner in Warsaw Cab at Night, one of the nocturnes Jozef Pankiewicz painted after Paris drew him toward tonal city scenes. Gaslight pools on wet cobbles while the horse and driver hold still in the dark. Deep blues and blacks dominate, broken by a single amber glow that slides across the cab roof and shafts. Buildings dissolve into smudged silhouettes, their windows shut for the evening. The brushwork stays loose and loaded, closer to Whistler than to academic finish, and the street surface carries thin reflected streaks of light. Hang it where the mood suits: a dim hallway, a study with a reading lamp, or above a console in an entryway that gets no direct sun.
