Spring Sun
Blossom and bare branches against a sky pushed to pure yellow. Cuno Amiet's Spring Sun brings painted daylight into a room, bright and unhurried.

An orchard in early spring. Bare branches cross the picture from edge to edge, tipped with white blossom. Above them, Amiet lets the sky go almost pure lemon yellow, so the light seems to sit on the surface of the painting rather than inside the scene. The ground is built from thick strokes of cadmium and chrome green. Nothing is blended. Everything was painted fast, in full daylight, and the speed is still visible. It reads as an afternoon that has not finished happening.
Amiet spent decades at the Oschwand farmstead in the Emmental, painting the same hills and orchards through every season. He was the link between Swiss tradition and French color, a friend of Hodler and an early convert to the lessons of Gauguin and the Nabis. Spring Sun belongs to his mature years, when he trusted color to do the work of drawing and stopped hedging.

A Swiss Orchard Meets French Color
Landscape was the national subject of Swiss painting. Alpine peaks, village views, weather. The tradition was descriptive and tonal, built on careful drawing and a respect for local fact. Amiet absorbed all of it, then went to Paris and Brittany and came back with a different set of rules. Color could be independent of nature. A sky could be yellow because the painting needed it to be. This places him beside Hodler as one of the painters who moved Swiss art into the modern age.
What holds attention here is the tension. The subject is conservative, an orchard any nineteenth century painter would recognize. The treatment is not. Blossom clusters are single dabs of unblended white, the trunks quick dark calls across a bright field. The eye keeps negotiating between the familiar scene and the nearly abstract surface. That negotiation does not wear out. It rewards a room you sit in often, because there is always something left to settle.
Fast Strokes, No Blending
Color as Structure
At arm's length the drawing almost disappears. The branches hold their shape through contrast alone, dark lines against a field of yellow and green. Amiet lets hue carry the composition, warm at the centre and cooler where the ground recedes. It is the method he took from the Nabis, and it means the picture stays legible from across a room while turning into pure surface up close.
The Blossom Dabs
Each cluster of blossom is a small load of unblended white, placed in one touch. Look closely and the individual marks are distinct, slightly raised ridges of paint. Step back and they resolve into flowering branches. That double reading, mark and then image, is what keeps the surface alive. A reproduction with real scale preserves this far better than a small image ever can.
Light on the Surface
The yellow sky is not atmosphere, it is paint applied thickly and evenly, almost to the top edge of the picture plane. The light behaves as if it were falling on the painting rather than out of it. This flatness was radical in its context and it is the reason the image holds a modern room so easily. It meets daylight without competing with it.

This is a painting for rooms that get real daylight. A kitchen with pale wood and linen, a sunroom, an entry hall with a south or east window. The lemon yellow lifts a neutral palette without shouting at it, and the green ground keeps it grounded against white walls or warm plaster. The smaller size works above a console or a sideboard. The larger one wants a clear wall of its own, centred at eye level, where the branch pattern can run edge to edge. Pair it with dark oak or black metal and the brightness reads as deliberate. Hang it where morning light can meet the painted kind.
