Thatched Cottage

A low cottage crouches under heavy thatch in Thatched Cottage, Gustave Loiseau combing the roof into short, trembling ridges of ochre and dry gold. No edge stays still. Plaster walls carry a chalky white, cooling to grey beneath the deep eaves. Crosshatched strokes lay each course of straw in the post impressionist manner, and sap green foliage thickens around the doorway. A pale path warms toward rose where feet have worn it bare. Farmhouse kitchen, reading nook, entryway with whitewashed brick: the dusty ambers overhead sit easily beside timber, linen, and morning light.
