Spring Sun

Bare orchard branches cross the whole canvas, tipped with white blossom and set against a sky Amiet pushes toward pure lemon yellow. Spring Sun belongs to his Oschwand years, when the Swiss painter let color do the work of drawing. Thick strokes of cadmium and chrome green pile over the ground, and the light sits on the surface rather than inside the scene. Blossom clusters read as dabs of unblended white, the trunks as quick dark calls across the field. Everything is painted fast, in full daylight. A kitchen or sunroom with pale wood and linen suits its brightness. Hang it where morning light can meet the painted kind.
