Breton Landscape

Slate roofs and granite walls anchor this Breton landscape. Gustave Loiseau reads the rainwashed farmland of Brittany with a restless, crosshatched touch, and low clouds crowd behind the buildings. Oil paint sits in short interlaced strokes, mossy green over heather violet, while a pearl grey sky lowers above drystone enclosures and grazing sheep. A footpath slips through wet pasture toward the sea, each field built from dozens of separate flecks of color. It settles into a study lined with books, or an entryway that wants the hush of Atlantic weather and salt on the wind.
