Start With the Wall, Not the Print

The fear behind most hanging questions is a hole in the wrong place. It is a fair fear, and the fix costs almost nothing. Find out what the wall is made of before you touch a drill. Plasterboard takes a self-drilling anchor. Brick and concrete take a masonry plug. A stud finder costs about fifteen dollars and removes the guesswork entirely. If you would rather not drill at all, a heavy-duty adhesive hook rated above the weight of your print will hold a framed poster on most smooth surfaces.

Height matters more than people expect. Galleries hang work so its centre sits near 145 cm from the floor, and that rule works in a living room too. Hold the print against the wall at that height and live with the mark for a day before committing. The Steps for Framed and Canvas

Framed posters ship with hanging hardware included, so check the back of the frame before buying anything. Most use a wire or two D-rings. Wire is forgiving, because a single hook takes it and the frame self-levels with a small nudge. D-rings need two marks, levelled with a spirit level, and two hooks. Either way, the drill bit should match the anchor, not the screw. Push the anchor in flush, drive the screw until it bites, and stop. Over-tightening strips plasterboard faster than anything else.

Canvas editions are lighter than they look and usually hang from a single point or a hanging bar on the back. One hook, correctly anchored, is enough. The one mistake worth avoiding is hanging a canvas where direct sun hits it for hours each day, because pigment and canvas both age faster in strong light. Where Things Go Wrong

Three failures account for nearly every damaged print. The first is an anchor too weak for the weight, which drops the frame and cracks the corner. Weigh the print if the listing does not state it, then buy an anchor rated well above that number. The second is a hook placed by eye alone, which leaves a second hole when the level disagrees. A pencil mark and a spirit level cost nothing and prevent it.

The third is humidity. A bathroom or a wall above a radiator will move a canvas and cloud a framed print over time, whatever the quality of the reproduction. Interior walls away from moisture sources are the safe default.
