Lantern studies

A paper lantern takes shape line by line, ribs fanning out from a narrow collar, the whole form still half open like a folded bell. Max Pietschmann built these lantern studies from quick pencil and ink strokes, each sheet circling the same problem of light held in paper. Look closely and the draftsmanship carries everything: hatched ribs, a bamboo frame suggested in two confident strokes, washes of amber and smoke grey pooling where the glow would fall. Some sketches sit finished, others trail off at the collar, keeping the working energy of a studio page. Hang it in a reading nook or a narrow hallway where low lamplight meets it, and the subject answers the room, lantern calling to lantern after dark.

A stretched canvas: the image is printed on a cotton-polyester weave (300–350 gsm) and wrapped over FSC-certified wood stretcher bars. A hanging kit is included, so no frame or extra hardware is needed.

Dust with a soft, dry cloth only — avoid water or cleaning products on the canvas face — and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators.

As a guide, a piece hung above furniture should span roughly two-thirds of that furniture width. If you are between two sizes, the larger option almost always reads better on the wall than expected.

Every piece is made to order, then shipped free with tracking. US and Europe/UK orders typically arrive in 4–9 business days; Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and the UAE in 7–16 business days. A tracking link is emailed as soon as it ships. Full details are on our shipping policy.

Orders within the US, UK and EU are domestic and do not incur customs fees. Orders to our extended network (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, UAE) may be subject to import duties or VAT set by your local customs authority — these are not collected by us.
