Start with the wall, not the print

The most common mistake is buying a size first and finding a wall for it later. Work the other way round. Measure the wall you intend to use, note any furniture below it, and subtract. A framed poster should span between two thirds and three quarters of the width of the furniture or wall section beneath it. Anything under 45 cm wide tends to read as an accent rather than a statement, and a single small print on a large empty wall is the classic way a purchase disappoints.

Most people discover their instinct runs either too small or too large, and the taped outline corrects it before money is spent. Check the sightlines too: the print should be fully visible from the main seating position, not cropped by a doorway or a lamp.

Proportion is the last check. A wide panoramic composition suits a horizontal wall; a tall vertical figure study needs a narrow stretch of wall or a shelf arrangement.
