Pont Aven

A stone bridge crosses the Aven in loose, searching strokes of grey and green, Gustave Loiseau catching the Breton river town of Pont Aven at the exact hour when water turns pewter and the banks go soft. Whitewashed facades pile up the slope behind the arches, their shutters and slate roofs broken into quick dabs of cream, moss, and charcoal. Reflections wobble below in short horizontal ticks, the kind of en plein air brushwork that made the post impressionist landscapes of Brittany feel lived in rather than staged. The whole scene hums with damp Atlantic air and river mist, the kind of atmosphere that settles over a study, a hallway, or a reading nook and keeps it there.
