Les Martigues

Fishing cabins and pale facades lean over the canals of Les Martigues, the lagoon town at the edge of Provence that Gustave Loiseau recorded in his broken, mosaic-like touch. Small square dabs of emerald, cobalt and lilac shiver across the canal while the houses hold still in cream and dusty rose. A footbridge crosses mid-picture, rowboats sit low on the water, shuttered windows take the hard southern light. The brushwork reads like laid tesserae, color doing all the drawing. A kitchen with whitewashed cabinetry, a stairway landing, or a sunroom in sea-glass tones gives these greens and pinks the daylight they ask for.
