Art Forms in Nature 98

New Objectivity · Canvas

A seed pod fills the frame edge to edge, lit from one side, its hollows falling into black. On a wall it reads as sculpture first and botany second.

One Light, One Surface, No Distraction

Where the Eye Lands

The brightest ridge sits slightly above centre, and the composition is built around it. Everything else is arranged as a descent into shadow, so the first glance fixes on one point and the rest of the image is discovered in sequence. At arm's length you can trace the path deliberately, ridge to spine to hollow, and it holds the same route each time. That kind of compositional discipline is rare and it is why the image never feels busy on a wall.

The Grey Field

Blossfeldt printed his plates with a background that sits between chalk white and mid grey, and this plate keeps the range wide. The field is never flat. It carries faint gradations that give the pod room to breathe and stop the edges of the form from cutting hard against the paper. On canvas that tonal softness survives well, and the transition from light to shadow reads as gradual rather than abrupt, which suits a room with mixed daylight.

Sculpture in Silver

Raking side light is the oldest trick in the sculptor's kit and Blossfeldt uses it without decoration. Each scale casts a small shadow onto the one below it, and the accumulation of those shadows is what gives the pod its weight. No drawing could produce this, because the information lives in the fall of light rather than the outline. Standing close, the surface seems to project forward from the picture plane, an effect that holds even at the smaller size.

Germany Between the Wars, Up Close

Blossfeldt worked in the orbit of New Objectivity, the German movement that favoured sharp focus, plain light and subjects taken at face value. Where painters of the same years were dissolving form, he was recording it with a patience closer to engineering. His magnified plants shared a sensibility with the industrial photography of the era, the same belief that a close, honest look at any object could yield something monumental.

What holds attention here is the tension between scale and subject. The form is enormous on the wall, yet the eye knows it came from something small enough to hold. Each viewing resolves that tension differently. In dim light the shadows deepen and the pod turns architectural. In daylight the grey field lifts and the spines sharpen. A photograph that changes with the hour of the day keeps its place on a wall for years.

Editorial Insight
“The emptiness around the form does as much work as the form itself.”

Plate 98, Seen Sideways

Blossfeldt shows almost nothing here. No stem, no leaf, no hint of soil or sky. The pod is cropped so tightly that its edges fall outside the picture, and the eye enters through the negative space instead, the pale grey field that surrounds the form. That space is where the image begins. Light rakes in from one side, each spine catches it, and the hollows go dark. The eye lands on the brightest ridge first, then travels down into shadow, reading the surface like terrain.

Blossfeldt spent decades photographing plant specimens at extreme magnification, first as teaching aids for his students in Berlin. He believed the forms of nature carried a design intelligence worth studying closely. The Art Forms in Nature plates appeared in the late 1920s and changed how photographers and designers looked at ordinary plants. Plate 98 sits at the far end of that logic, where magnification stops being a method and becomes the whole subject.

Designing with Art Forms in Nature 98

This is a photograph for a room used for concentration. A study with a dark timber desk, a reading chair with a low lamp, or a hallway that ends in daylight all suit it. The grey field asks for a wall in a flat neutral, warm white or deep slate, and it sits comfortably above furniture with clean lines, a sideboard, a console, a long low shelf. Hang it so the centre sits at eye level when seated, around 55 to 60 inches from the floor in a study. The smaller size works alone above a desk or a narrow table. The larger one wants a wider wall, or a companion in monochrome hung beside it at the same height. One directional lamp, placed to the side, will pick up the spines in the evening exactly as Blossfeldt lit them.

This sits alongside Art Forms in Nature 98 and Fishing Harbour with Sunlit Mountains. Study from North Norway in the archive.
