Art Forms in Nature 98

A seed pod splits open against pale grey, every scale and spine rendered edge to edge. Karl Blossfeldt photographed plant specimens at extreme magnification for his Art Forms in Nature series, and plate 98 carries that logic further: the subject fills the frame so completely it reads as architecture rather than botany. Light rakes across the surface from one side, catching each ridge and throwing the hollows into deep shadow. The tonal range runs from chalk white to near black, which gives the form a sculptural weight no drawing could match. It suits a study, a laboratory corridor, or any quiet room where close looking is the point.
