Sunset

Les Nabis · Framed Poster

A molten sun sinking into a band of deep red, the land below reduced to near-black silhouette. Félix Vallotton's Sunset turns the last minutes of daylight into flat, deliberate shape.

Flat Color and Decisive Edges

The Sun as a Shape

Stand close and the sun is simply a disc of unbroken orange, no glow bleeding into the sky around it. Vallotton refuses the softness most painters would reach for. The hard edge is the whole point. It makes the sun feel less like light and more like a form with weight, something placed deliberately on the surface rather than observed through it. At arm's length you can trace the boundary with your eye and find no wavering in it.

Silhouette Against Sky

The lower register is near-black, flat, and unmodeled, meeting the red sky along a clean line. This is the Nabi move at its most confident. Because the dark mass carries no interior detail, it reads as a single weight holding the bottom of the picture, and the eye keeps returning to the boundary where the two zones meet. In a room, that dark band anchors the piece and gives the burning sky above it somewhere to sit.

A Reduced Palette

Vermilion, crimson, orange, black. Four tones do the entire work, and their arrangement matters more than any single hue. The warmth concentrates around the sun and cools as the sky climbs, so the picture has direction even without perspective. This economy is why the image reproduces so faithfully. Nothing depends on texture or brushwork that a flat surface cannot carry, and nothing is lost between the original and the edition on your wall.

Painting After Impressionism Let Go

By the 1890s a generation of painters had absorbed Impressionism and decided it was not enough. The Nabis, gathered around Gauguin's example, favored broad zones of color, simplified forms, and a deliberate flatness borrowed from Japanese prints and from symbolist thinking. A landscape did not have to record a place. It could stand as a pattern of feeling, ordered like a design. Vallotton, a Swiss-born outsider in Paris, pushed that idea further than most of his circle, often stripping his scenes to a few decisive masses.

What keeps the eye here is the tension between heat and restraint. The subject is the most dramatic moment a landscape can offer, yet the treatment is almost severe. Vermilion against black, a disc against a line, no modeling anywhere. That severity is what makes it livable. A scene this reduced does not compete with a room or fatigue after a month of looking. It settles in and keeps working.

Editorial Insight
“The most theatrical hour of the day, painted with the calm of a woodcut.”

Sunset by Félix Vallotton

Landscape painters have long chased the light at the end of the day. Monet dissolved it into atmosphere. Turner let it swallow the scene entirely. Vallotton does neither. In Sunset the sun stays a solid disc, hard-edged and unrepentant, burning orange against a sky that deepens toward crimson. The land beneath sits in near-black, its edges clean and unmodeled. Nothing is softened. The scene reads as shape first and detail second, which is exactly why it holds a wall the way it does.

Vallotton worked alongside the Nabis, the group of painters who treated a picture as a arranged surface rather than a window. He brought to them a colder temperament. His interiors and landscapes share this one's quality of compression, a refusal to decorate beyond what the composition needs. Sunset is that discipline pointed at the sky. It gives you the drama of dusk with the calm of a woodcut, and it never apologizes for either.

Designing with Sunset

This is a piece for the hour when lamps come on. It suits an entryway above a console, where the dark base grounds the composition at eye level and the burning sky greets whoever walks in. In a living room it sits well across from a reading chair, against plaster white, warm grey, or deep green, and it flatters walnut and dark oak furniture. Hang it so the horizon line lands around 150 centimeters from the floor. The smaller size works in a hallway or above a sideboard. At sixty by ninety it carries a sofa wall on its own. The largest size wants a clear stretch of wall and little else around it. One picture, one band of color, done.
