Sunset

The sun drops toward the horizon in a single molten disc, burning orange against a band of deepening red at the skyline. This is Sunset by Felix Vallotton, a Post-Impressionist meditation on the last minutes of daylight. Vallotton flattens the scene into broad, deliberate zones of color. The sky shifts from vermilion near the sun to dusky crimson above, while the land or water below sits in near-black silhouette, its edges clean and unmodeled. Everything reads as shape first, detail second, a quality that places the work close to the Nabi circle and their taste for simplified, decorative form.
