The size range that works

Start with the wall, not the artwork. In most small bedrooms the usable wall is the strip above the headboard or the narrow stretch beside a window. A print of 12 by 16 inches suits the narrow stretch. A print of 18 by 24 inches suits the headboard wall in a room of average proportions. Anything larger than 24 by 36 inches will dominate a compact room and make the ceiling feel lower.

Height matters as much as width. Hang the centre of the print about 57 to 60 inches from the floor, or roughly 8 to 10 inches above the headboard. In a small bedroom this keeps the print in the sightline from the doorway and stops it from feeling pinned to the ceiling. Leave breathing room on both sides. A print that nearly touches the window frame will look cramped even if the size is technically correct.

Canvas or framed paper in a compact room

Canvas and framed paper behave differently at small sizes. A canvas has no frame, so it reads lighter on the wall and suits a room where every surface is already busy with furniture. A framed print has a harder edge and more formal presence, which can help a plain wall in a rented room. Both work in a small bedroom. The choice is about the wall you have, not about quality.
