What The Size Difference Actually Means

Both formats share a 2:3 ratio, so the image is identical in composition. Nothing is added or cut. The difference is scale. At 30x45 cm you get a piece roughly the footprint of an A3 sheet with a little extra height. At 40x60 cm the canvas is a third larger in each direction and carries 78 percent more surface area. That arithmetic matters more than it sounds, because Benois's work is dense with small figures, architecture and stage-like depth.

In his watercolours of Versailles gardens and 18th-century courtly promenades, much of the pleasure sits in small details, a distant figure, a balustrade, a hedge cut into order. Which Size Suits Which Room

The 30x45 cm canvas works above furniture you sit close to. A desk, a sideboard, a reading chair, a narrow hallway wall. It also works in pairs or trios, where two or three smaller canvases side by side often look more deliberate than one large one. In a small bedroom or a study, 40x60 cm can start to feel like the wall is working for the picture rather than the other way round.

The 40x60 cm canvas wants space around it. As a rule of thumb it needs at least 15 to 20 cm of clear wall on every side and reads best when its centre sits near eye level, around 145 to 155 cm from the floor.
