Moonlight

A full moon hangs high over a dark coastline, throwing a pale ribbon of light across calm water. Felix Vallotton built Moonlight from flat, disciplined planes of color, the way he composed his finest nocturnes. Deep blues and near-blacks fill the sky and headland, while the moons reflection burns a hard, pale column down the center of the sea. Silhouetted pines or cliffs block the left edge, their edges cut clean against the glow. Vallotton favored smooth, poster-like surfaces, so every shape here stays flat and deliberate, with no atmospheric blur to soften the contrast. A nocturne like this suits a study, a reading nook, or any dim corner where lamplight and moonlight can trade places.
