Start With the Wall, Not the Print

Most hanging mistakes happen before the print is ever touched. Plasterboard holds a small hook, but anything heavier needs an anchor driven into a stud or a toggle fixing. Solid plaster, brick and concrete each want their own plug. Tap the wall. A hollow sound means drywall, a dull thud means masonry. Ten minutes of checking prevents a cracked corner later.

The other early decision is position. A canvas hung at eye level reads as part of the room. Hung too high, it floats awkwardly above the furniture and the eye has nowhere to rest. The standard is 145 to 152 cm from floor to the centre of the canvas. Above a sofa or sideboard, leave 15 to 20 cm of clearance between the furniture top and the bottom edge of the print.

Hardware That Actually Holds

A single nail under the stretcher bar is the cheapest method and the most common cause of a tilted canvas. Two hooks spaced a third of the width apart, with the wire or the bar resting on both, keep the print level and spread the load. For wider pieces, a French cleat or a slotted rail takes the weight across the full width and makes levelling simple.

Whatever you choose, the fixing should take more than the print weighs. A stretched canvas of 60 by 90 cm is rarely heavier than a few kilograms, but the shock of a door slamming or someone bumping the wall is what loosens fixings. Getting It Level and Keeping It There

Mark the wall with painter's tape rather than pencil. Cut two strips the width of the hanging points, level them with a spirit level, then drive the hooks through the tape. Canvas moves with humidity. A print that hangs perfectly in a dry winter can bow slightly in a damp summer, especially on an exterior wall.
