It keeps the upper third of the picture weightless, so the stone of the bridge carries the composition instead of competing with weather above it.

Water in Broken Strokes

The reflections are built from short, disconnected strokes of grey and olive, each one a fragment of the bridge above. Nothing is smoothed into a mirror. Up close the surface reads almost abstract; at viewing distance the fragments snap together into moving water. That double reading is the technical heart of the picture, and it is the detail that keeps giving on repeated viewing.

Barges, moored boats and crossing figures are handled with a few strokes each, sized honestly against the arches. The restraint is deliberate.
