A Canvas Print Stays New With Light Control and Gentle Dusting

Sunlight, not handling, shortens the life of most canvas prints. The care routine that preserves one is short, cheap and mostly about where you hang it.

The short answer

Hang the print on a wall that never gets direct sunlight and dust it lightly with a soft, dry cloth about once a month. Keep humidity in the 40 to 60 percent range, avoid all cleaning fluids, and never press on the canvas surface. A print kept under these conditions should hold its appearance for a decade or two.

Light Is the Only Real Enemy

A canvas print fades from light long before it fails from anything else. Direct sun is the worst offender, but even bright indirect daylight accumulates damage over years. The practical fix costs nothing. Hang the piece on a wall that never receives direct sun, and prefer a wall lit by soft, steady ambient light. North facing walls get the least punishing daylight in most rooms. If the only available wall catches afternoon sun, a curtain or blind drawn during the brightest hours will slow the process enormously. Nothing else in a care routine comes close to this one decision in effect.

Placement deserves more thought than it usually gets. A print hung above a working radiator or beside a kitchen oven lives in a hostile microclimate, because cycling heat stresses both the canvas and the coating on top of it. Bogdanov-Belsky's classroom interiors, built from deep browns and dark backgrounds, mask early fading, which cuts both ways. The print looks fine longer, so by the time the shift is obvious the damage is done. Treat any wall that feels warm to your hand as unsuitable. It should read neutral when you press your palm flat against it.
