Winter at Pontoise

Snow settles over the rooftops and gardens of Pontoise in this Gustave Loiseau winter scene. Pale light washes across the hillside town, where chimneys, bare trees, and lanes stand hushed under a fresh white covering. Loiseau worked in oil, building the scene from short, enlivened brushstrokes. Muted greys and soft blues carry the sky, while warm ochres and muted browns peek through the snow on walls and roofs. Every stroke follows the structure of the town, from the sloping street to the bare branches crossing the pale sky.
