Seelandschaft mit bergigem Ufer
Cuno Amiet's lake landscape in cold cobalt and violet grey. A canvas edition that cools a room without dimming it, and reads clearly from across the floor.

Broken Strokes on Water
At arm's length the lake resolves into dozens of short horizontal marks, laid side by side rather than blended. Cobalt sits next to viridian, viridian next to a greyed green, each stroke a separate decision. From a few paces back the marks fuse into moving water. This is the oldest trick of broken colour and it still works. The surface shimmers because the eye is asked to mix it, and a picture you mix yourself is a picture you keep looking at.
Violet Shadows, Green Light
The slopes are built from violet grey and pine green, stacked in planes rather than outlined. Amiet refuses the local colour of rock and forest and instead paints what the light does to them. Where the ridgeline catches snow the violet lifts to near white. Where the bank meets water the green deepens almost to black. The mountains read as solid because the temperature shifts, not because any contour was drawn. It is colour doing the work of drawing.
The Scraped Sky
The sky is the fastest passage in the picture and the most telling. Cold white, dragged in a single sweep, thin enough that the ground shows through in places. Against all that active water the emptiness lands as silence. It also gives the edition its breath on a wall. In a room with dense colour or heavy furniture, that pale upper third opens a window the eye can rest in. Leave it unobstructed and the whole picture gains depth.

Amiet and the Colour of Swiss Modernism
Amiet stands at the head of Swiss modernism, the painter who carried what he had learned among the Nabis and the Fauves back across the border. His contemporaries in Germany were flattening form into expression; Amiet went the other way, using broken colour to build space. The landscape tradition he inherited, all topographical accuracy and patriotic calm, gave him a subject worth overturning. Lakes and mountains had been painted to death. What he brought to them was a conviction that a hillside could be violet and a shadow could be green, and that the picture would hold together if the relationships were true.
What holds attention here is the discipline beneath the freedom. Every stroke answers another. The cobalt of the water is repeated, cooled, in the shadow of the slopes. The snow on the ridgelines echoes the scraped sky, so the top and bottom of the picture speak to each other. Nothing is decorative by accident. This is the quality that rewards daily living with. On a Monday the painting reads as calm. On a grey afternoon the violets come forward. It keeps offering a different version of itself, and never a loud one.
Seelandschaft mit bergigem Ufer
The lake is moving. Short horizontal strokes of cobalt and viridian cross the surface, thinning to silver where the peaks lean in. Above the waterline the slopes climb in planes of violet grey and pine, ridgelines edged with snow. The sky is scraped in cold white, one pass of the knife, no correction. Nothing in the picture is still, yet nothing hurries. From across a room the colour does the work first. Blue meets green, green gives way to grey, and the eye settles against the far shore as if the lake had been waiting there all along.
Cuno Amiet spent a lifetime arguing that colour could carry a picture on its own. Trained in Weimar and Paris, he absorbed the lessons of Pont-Aven and returned to Switzerland to paint light as substance rather than description. He worked the same landscapes again and again, often near his home in the Emmental and the lakes of the Bernese Oberland, finding each visit a different weather. This lake scene belongs to that patient habit. It is not a postcard of the Alps. It is one afternoon's temperature, held in paint, by a painter who trusted cold colour to do what warmth usually does.
Designing with Seelandschaft mit bergigem Ufer
This is a picture for a room that runs warm. Hang it in a hallway with oak floors and white walls, or above a walnut sideboard where the cold blues cut the wood's amber. In a study it gives a north-facing calm without the flatness of grey paint. The smaller size suits a corridor or the wall beside a window, where the water reads at a glance. The larger one wants a sofa wall or the end of a dining room, hung so its centre sits near eye level. Keep a clear zone around it. The scraped sky needs air, and it will repay the space with depth. Pair it with linen, dark green textiles, or nothing at all.
The same question comes up in the writing on Thunderstormy Sky and Herbstlandschaft, Herbst auf der Oschwand.
