Cuno Amiet · Framed Poster

A bare tree against snow, painted in cool violets and pale ochre. On a wall it reads as weather, quiet and cold, and gives a room a point of stillness.

Where Amiet Lets the Snow Breathe

The shadow under the tree is blue. Not grey, not black, but a violet that pools at the base of the trunk and climbs into the branchwork. From that single note the whole scene opens. Amiet builds the snowfield from loose strokes of lilac and pale ochre, the horizon rides high, and the small dark figure of the tree carries nearly everything. It is a picture about low light and cold air, and it behaves on a wall the way a north window behaves on a room.

Cuno Amiet spent the 1890s in Brittany and Paris, where the colour lessons of Pont-Aven pushed him away from careful tonal painting. He returned to Switzerland with a looser hand and a bolder palette, and became one of the first Swiss painters to work in an expressionist register. Landscapes stayed his anchor through decades of stylistic shifts. This winter scene sits late in that habit, restrained where his portraits flare, and shows how much he could do with a tree, a field and weather.

Snow as Colour, Not Absence

Painting snow is a test of a painter's nerve. The easy route is white paper with a dark tree on top. The harder route, taken by the Nordic and Alpine painters of the late nineteenth century, is to treat snow as a surface that catches every colour of a low sky. Amiet learned that lesson from French colourism and applied it to Swiss ground. His winters belong with the snow scenes of the northern tradition, where the subject is not the tree but the light falling around it.

What holds attention here is restraint. One trunk, one network of branches, one field. The eye keeps returning to the violet shadow because nothing else competes with it. That economy is exactly why the image survives daily life. Rooms change, light moves across the day, and the picture stays legible from across the room and rewarding at arm's length. It asks little and gives back steadily, which is the quality that separates a picture you live with from one you stop seeing.

Editorial Insight
“Amiet paints the snow so it holds the memory of evening light.”
Composition and Craft

Loose Strokes Over a Cold Ground

The Colour of Snow

At arm's length the snowfield breaks into individual strokes of grey, lilac and pale ochre. Nothing is left as flat white. Each patch carries a temperature, cooler near the horizon, warmer where the ground rises toward the tree. The effect is air you can feel, a specific hour of a winter afternoon rather than a generic season. Up close the surface looks almost casual. From a few steps back the strokes resolve into a single luminous field, and that shift is the pleasure of the picture.

One Tree, Built in Ink and Shadow

The trunk is a dark vertical that anchors the composition. Amiet draws the branches with a fine, almost calligraphic line, letting them thin as they rise until they dissolve against the sky. The blue shadow at the base does the structural work of grounding the figure. Because the horizon sits high, the tree occupies the middle distance and the sky does the rest. It is a composition of subtraction, and every element that remains earns its place.

High Horizon, Open Sky

Placing the horizon high is the quiet decision that makes the painting work. It gives the sky most of the sheet and pushes the motif down into the lower third, so the scene feels observed rather than arranged. The eye enters through the pale upper field, drops to the tree, and rests on the violet shadow. That downward path is slow and unhurried. It mirrors how the picture functions in a room, drawing attention without demanding it, holding a wall with very little.

Designing with Baum in Winterlandschaft

This is a picture for quiet rooms. A hallway with a single console, a reading corner beside a north window, the wall above a low sideboard in a bedroom. It suits plaster white, warm grey, oak and walnut, and deep greens, and it holds its own against linen and wool textures. Hang it at eye level with clear space on either side, since the tree needs solitude to work. The smallest size sits comfortably over a desk or in a narrow passage. The mid and large sizes carry a main wall on their own, the cold violet shadow reading clearly even in low evening light. Pair it with nothing, or with one small photograph, and let the snow do the rest.

A comparable case is made in Thunderstormy Sky and Herbstlandschaft, Herbst auf der Oschwand.
