One bare tree holds the middle of the picture, its dark trunk and fine branch network set against snow that Amiet lets run almost white in places and cool violet blue in others. Cuno Amiet paints the winter landscape with a light hand, the ground built from loose strokes of grey, lilac and pale ochre rather than flat whiteness, so the snowfield feels cold air and low light instead of empty paper. Shadow pools blue at the base of the tree, and the horizon sits high, giving the small motif room to breathe. Quiet, sparsely furnished rooms suit it best, a hallway or reading corner where the single figure of the tree can carry the wall on its own.
