Baum in Winterlandschaft
A bare tree in snow, painted by Cuno Amiet with a light hand. The scene holds a quiet room with cold light and a single dark figure at its centre.

Snow covers the ground and the light is already going. A single tree stands in the middle distance, its trunk dark against a field that runs from near-white to cool violet. Amiet paints the cold itself. Loose strokes of grey, lilac and pale ochre build the snowfield, so the ground reads as air and low sun rather than blank paper. Blue shadow pools at the base of the tree. The horizon sits high, and the small motif keeps all the room it needs.
Amiet worked across seven decades and moved through most of what painting was doing around him, from plein-air naturalism toward a colour sense closer to the Fauves. He was Swiss, close to Hodler, and never fully surrendered to any single school. This winter scene shows his restraint. Colour is used sparingly, almost grudgingly, and the picture gains from it. Where his portraits run hot, this landscape stays cold and still.

Winter Light in Swiss Landscape Painting
Snow was a serious subject for northern painters long before photography arrived. It offered a problem no other motif posed, since snow is never white. It takes the colour of the hour, the sky, the shadow beside it. Monet made a series of grainstacks under snow. Scandinavian and Swiss painters returned to winter again and again because it stripped landscape down to structure and temperature. Amiet belongs to this lineage and adds something of his own, a looseness of touch that keeps the surface alive.
The image holds attention because almost nothing happens in it. One tree, one field, one quality of light. That spareness is what makes it work on a wall year after year. Busy pictures exhaust a room. This one does the opposite, giving a hallway or bedroom a fixed point of calm that changes subtly with the daylight passing over it.
Loose Strokes Over a Cold Ground
The Colour of Snow
Look closely and the field is built from grey, lilac, pale ochre and blue, laid in short open strokes. At a distance the eye reads it as snow. Up close the surface shivers. Amiet refuses flat white because flat white reads as paper, not weather. This is the first thing a viewer notices from across a room and the last thing they stop noticing.
One Dark Vertical
The trunk is the only strong dark in the picture. It anchors the composition the way a single piece of furniture anchors a room. Its branch network thins to fine lines against the sky, drawn with a brush that barely presses. Everything else in the painting is temperature and atmosphere. Remove the tree and there is no picture. That is the point.
A High Horizon
Amiet pushes the horizon well above centre, so the snowfield dominates and the sky shrinks to a narrow band. The effect is of standing in the landscape rather than looking at it from a hill. It also gives the small motif room to breathe, letting the emptiness around the tree carry as much weight as the tree itself.

This is a piece for rooms that stay quiet. A hallway with a runner and a coat hook, a reading corner beside a north window, the wall above a low sideboard in a bedroom painted in warm grey or off-white. The cold palette sits well against pale wood, linen and unpainted plaster, and it will not fight a room that already has texture. Hang it at eye level on a stretch of wall with nothing else on it. The smaller size suits an alcove or the space between two doorways. The larger one can carry a wall on its own, especially above a bench or a narrow console. One light source nearby is enough. The picture does the rest.
Read next to Thunderstormy Sky and Herbstlandschaft, Herbst auf der Oschwand, the argument becomes easier to follow.
