Cliffs in Normandy

Chalk cliffs rise sheer from a pewter Channel in Cliffs in Normandy, Gustave Loiseau pressing the Norman coast into his close-woven crosshatch, each facet of sea and sky built up stroke over stroke. Turf runs to the very lip of the headland, then the land lets go, a straight drop into grey green water where foam worries the base of the rock. Ochre veins streak the bleached faces where rain has drawn down the soft stone, and gulls ride small against the overcast. A stairwell or study with pale linen and weathered oak suits it, anywhere that could use a cold horizon all its own.
