Two girls stand where the forest thins into open light, slim trunks crowding behind them. Zwei Mädchen Am Waldrand by Otto Mueller turns that wooded threshold into pure expressionist geometry. Distemper on coarse canvas gives the color a dry, chalky matte finish. Flesh built from flat planes of salmon ochre, ringed in thin black contour. The faces reduce to a few strokes. Ground and foliage press into sage greens and clay browns, each form pared down to its essential line.
