Zimsko jutro

Snow buries the fields outside a Slovenian village in Zimsko jutro, the winter morning Ivan Grohar set down in short impressionist strokes of rose, lilac, and palest blue. A low sun clears the ridge and stretches every shadow into long threads of cobalt across the drifts. Wood smoke rises straight from darkened rooftops, and bare branches at the field edge scratch the brightening sky. Where the light lands, the snow itself turns pink. It belongs in a study or reading nook, a room where cool morning light can answer the cold air held inside the scene.
