Zigeunerkind Im Dorf

A gypsy child stands among village houses in Zigeunerkind Im Dorf, one of Otto Mueller most tender scenes of Sinti life. The child occupies the foreground with the calm, watchful stillness Mueller gave all his subjects. Flat planes of ochre and warm brown build the village behind, roofs reduced to simple geometry, figures drawn in that lean, sinuous outline Mueller favored over fluent brushwork. Skin tones in muted terracotta sit against the dusty ground, every contour simplified to its essential curve. Suited to a hallway or reading nook, where quiet, humane figuration rewards a slow glance.
