Zăvoi şi claie de fân

A riverside thicket closes over a tall haystack, both painted by Stefan Luchian in Zăvoi şi claie de fân. Green shade dominates the foreground while the hay burns gold against it. Luchian loads the foliage with layered greens, from deep viridian shadow to sunlit yellow-green flickers along the leaf edges. The haystack itself is built from thick, directional strokes of ochre, cream, and dried-grass tan, its rounded mass catching light on one side. Cool reflections of water and sky slip between the trees behind it, giving the summer heat a breathing counterpoint. Suited to a study or reading room where pastoral calm and painterly texture set the tone for quiet hours.
