A Bend in the Eure

The Eure swings wide beneath a pale morning sky, its far bank a low line of poplars and tiled rooftops. Gustave Loiseau caught this river bend with the small, packed brushstrokes that made his Normandy landscapes so persuasive. Water takes up most of the composition, painted in greys and soft greens that pick up whatever the sky is doing. On the near bank, grass runs to umber and sage, worked in short diagonal strokes. Trees are not outlines but clusters of dabs, dark against the light. Somewhere a village hides behind the foliage; only chimneys and a steeple give it away. Well suited to a study or reading room, anywhere the view can sit quietly above a desk or shelf.
