Zakola Wisly

A bend in the Vistula unfolds across the sheet, the river curling past its banks in one long unhurried sweep. Zakola Wisly belongs to Stanisław Wyspiański, and it reads like a drawing made on the spot, paper and pencil catching a summer afternoon. The water stays light, almost unworked, so the eye goes instead to the drawn banks: dense clusters of short strokes marking willows and low scrub, hatching that thickens where the ground rises, tree masses shaded from soft grey into near black. Open sky is left as bare paper, which sharpens every contour below it. Suited to a study or reading nook, anywhere a quiet river view rewards a second look.
