Yuryev-Polsky, St Georges Cathedral

White stone rises over Yuryev-Polsky in this Nicholas Roerich view of St Georges Cathedral, its drum and helmet dome set against a cool northern sky. Roerich paints the thirteenth-century cathedral of Yuryev-Polsky as a mass of carved limestone, the famous beast-and-saint reliefs along its upper bands rendered as a pale, almost ivory texture. Deep blue-greens settle over the rooftop and ground; the dome catches a muted silver light; small figures and a low fence give the church its human scale. Quiet, architectural, and gravity-heavy, it belongs in a study, a hallway, or beside a reading chair.
