Yuhinlahti

A bay opens between dark fir headlands, its water held in a single sheet of muted blue. This is Yuhinlahti, rendered by Nicholas Roerich with the restraint of a traveler who knew northern light intimately. The shore curves in ochre and raw sienna, thin paint allowing the ground to breathe through. Firs mass along the far bank in near-black green, their silhouettes precise against a pale sky.
