Young Woman in Bed

Propped among rumpled white pillows, a young woman turns her face toward the viewer in Young Woman in Bed, an intimate interior by the Nabi painter Edouard Vuillard. The bedding folds in cream and pale rose, its creases built from quick, loaded strokes. Behind the figure, wallpaper blooms in muted violet and olive, pattern pressing close until the room itself seems to recline. The chalky matte surface carries the tooth of cardboard beneath, every shadow laid in umber and lilac rather than black.
