Young Oaks

Slender oaks, hardly past sapling age, take the whole view in Young oaks by Pyotr Konchalovsky. He sets the viewer inside the grove, trunk to trunk, not across a clearing from it. He builds each trunk with loaded strokes of ochre and grey green, the bark ridged where paint sits thickest. Overhead, foliage breaks into dabs of sap green and yellow, sunlight dropping through in patches onto bracken and grass. Underfoot everything stays loose and quick, left open at the edges. A panelled study or stair landing suits it, somewhere the cool leaf shadow can offset a room that takes hard afternoon light.
