Young Apple Tree

A slender sapling lifts its first white blossom into a pale spring sky, the trunk still thin enough to show every brushstroke. Young apple tree gives Pyotr Konchalovsky a small subject and he answers with full-bodied oil paint. Petal clusters sit in thick dabs of lead white over sap green, while the grass below is dragged in short wet strokes of emerald and ochre. One leaning limb cuts the sky on a diagonal, young leaves already unfurling between the flowers. It belongs in a breakfast nook or a garden-facing study, anywhere that could use an orchard in its first season.
