Yellow Roses

Yellow roses fill the frame, painted loose and quick, petals gone buttery at the edges. Constantin Artachino handles the blooms with a sure, loaded brush. The color does the work here: cadmium yellow thick in the flower heads, thinning to lemon where light grazes them, deep olive and green-grey shadow beneath. Leaves slash across in single strokes, stems bend at odd angles, and the background stays soft and hazy so every bloom holds its heat. Roses this warm want a kitchen or sunroom, somewhere morning light lands on the wall beside a table set with coffee and cut flowers.
