Yellow Rock, Gloucester

A great golden boulder fills the frame, its sun-struck face painted in thick ochre and cadmium yellows that flicker against the blue of Gloucester harbor behind it. Sloan gives the rock real weight, built up in short, confident strokes of paint. Shadows run violet where the sun cuts across the stone. Fishing boats and low rooftops sit small at its base, hemmed in by the massive form. The sea reads as a band of cool green, almost chalky against the heat of the foreground. Water and sky share the same quick, broken brushwork. This kind of coastal scene belongs in a study or a sunroom, somewhere with morning light and a view of the water, or a hallway that needs a jolt of New England summer.
