Yellow Flowers

Yellow flowers crowd a shallow vase in this still life by Theodor Pallady, petals built from thick, buttery strokes that hold the light against a darkened interior. Pallady loads each bloom with cream, gold ochre and cadmium, the oil pigment sitting thick enough to cast its own small shadows. Green stems cut a loose diagonal, and the table edge runs in raw umber, its highlight scraped back to bare weave.
