Yawls in the Lagoon

Boats sit low in the water, masts tipped at slight angles against a pale horizon. Yawls in the Lagoon gathers them where the current slackens, hulls dark and patient, waiting on a tide that never quite arrives. Grey-green water fills most of the surface, worked in short horizontal strokes that catch light the way shallow lagoon water does. The yawls themselves carry weathered hulls of umber and slate, rigging drawn thin and quick, each mast a single dark line against the sky. Reflections break beneath the hulls in broken streaks of pearl and soft ochre, and the far shore stays a smudged band of olive where land meets light. Suited to a study or a reading nook, where quiet water and working boats give a room room to breathe.
