Yaroslavl. Church of Virgin Nativity

A whitewashed church rises above the Volga bank in Yaroslavl, its tented bell tower and green onion domes set against a rolling northern sky. Nicholas Roerich paints the Church of Virgin Nativity as the quiet anchor of the whole riverside town. Tempera gives the walls a chalky, sunlit dryness, while the domes burn in deep verdigris and the rooftops below settle into ochre and sienna. Thin bands of cloud drift across cobalt, and the church shadow falls long across the slope, every brushstroke flat and deliberate in the manner Roerich favored. Suited to a study or a hallway that gets evening light, where the calm geometry of old Russian church architecture can hold its own against plain walls.
